The tornadoes and destructive storms are the latest in a nearly two-week severe weather outbreak that will continue through Thursday with severe thunderstorms and localized flash flooding from the Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic, as well as southwestern Texas and eastern New Mexico. The event has become one of the most active stretch of tornadoes in the U.S. in eight years.

At least a dozen people were injured and dozens of homes and businesses were destroyed in the Kansas City area on Tuesday.

The Linwood community, about 30 miles west of Kansas City, was devastated Tuesday by a particularly destructive tornado, crushing structures and vehicles and downing trees and power lines.

Late Monday night into Tuesday, a series of tornadoes ripped through eastern Indiana and western Ohio, killing an 81-year-old man in Celina, Ohio. At least 75 homes were damaged in Pendleton, Indiana, and Huntsville, Indiana, according to Madison County Emergency Management spokesman Todd Harmeson.

Scattered severe storms are possible Thursday from the Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic, bringing damaging straight-line winds and large hail, possible tornadoes and flash flooding. The likelihood of widespread severe weather will decrease as the week comes to a close.
