Hurricane Laura is responsible for 18 U.S. deaths. Louisiana has the highest death toll at 14, eight of which were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from generators used due to power outages, Gov. John Bel Edwards said during a briefing Sunday afternoon. Laura was also responsible for four deaths in Texas and 23 in the Caribbean.

Laura made landfall near Cameron, Louisiana, early Thursday as a Category 4 storm, bringing heavy winds and a storm surge of over nine feet. Laura was the first recorded hurricane to make landfall as a Category 4 in southwest Louisiana.
