Before-and-after photos show Greenville, California, before, during and after the Dixie Fire ravaged the Gold Rush era town.

The Dixie Fire is now considered the largest single wildfire in California's recorded history. SF Gate explained that since the August Complex Fire, the largest recorded fire in California state history, was just that, a complex fire, meaning it was made up of multiple fires, the Dixie Fire qualifies as the largest single wildfire, though it officially ranks as the second largest in the state's history. The Associated Press reported that the Dixie Fire is about half the size of the August Complex Fire.

So far, the blaze has burned more than 762 square miles since its ignition on July 13, according to InciWeb. That's an area larger than the city of Los Angeles. As of Tuesday, the fire is only 25% contained.

The Dixie Fire charred 75% of Greenville, NBCNews reported, leaving very little behind. Historic buildings that were built in the late 1800s are now reduced to ash and rubble.

Some photos, taken nearly two weeks before the town was engulfed, show a hazy orange and yellow sky from the nearby wildfire smoke, an eerie harbinger of what was to come. The town was evacuated twice due to the fire. The first evacuation was canceled when firefighters were able to beat back the flames, saving the town for a short time before the next evacuation was issued and the town was lost to the blaze.

The entire downtown was burned, including homes, businesses and schools. The Plumas County town was home to about 1,000 people.

Currently, more than 9,500 people are under evacuation orders across Butte, Plumas, Lassen and Tehama counties due to the Dixie Fire. Around 39% of residents in Plumas County are under evacuation, according to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office.
