The planet's longest partial lunar eclipse since the 15th century was visible for millions under clear skies late Thursday night into early Friday morning, providing near-totality in an event that lasted more than six hours.

The eclipse was seen by many who set their alarm clocks or stayed up late across the United States and was also seen by some in Central and South America, as well as parts of Europe, Asia and even down into Australia.

At the height of the event, 97% of the moon was covered by the Earth's shadow. It was the longest eclipse in 580 years.
