Rescuers were searching for survivors on Thursday after a landslide triggered by torrential rains killed at least six people overnight in a suburb of Ivory Coast's economic hub of Abidjan City. The forecast calls for even more rain in the area on Friday and Saturday.

The victims were four adults and two children. Two others were hospitalized with injuries, according to the local fire department.

The landslide collapsed at least two homes in Mossikro, a neighborhood in the western district of Attécoubé, according to floodlist.com. Prime Minister Patrick Achi visited the site of the destruction on Thursday.

The area is no stranger to landslides, especially during the rainy season. In June 2020, torrential rains caused a landslide that killed at least 18 people in Abidjan's suburb of Anyama.

According to Bol News, authorities have been working to remove shanty homes in areas vulnerable to landslides, temporarily rehousing the occupants. Mossikro is considered one of the at-risk zones, and residents were warned to leave in March and April, the ministry of water works said in a statement.

Photos show rescue workers using heavy machinery to remove mud and debris and neighbors covered in mud digging with buckets, searching for people at the location of the incident.
