Huge open spaces are seen in the village of Schuld, Germany, giving an idea of how many houses were so badly damaged by the 2021 floods that they had to be demolished. One year after rushing, rising water poured through Germany's Ahr Valley, the region is still working to recover from historic flooding that left 134 people dead.

The water came overnight on July 14-15, 2021. It funneled through sometimes narrow and steep sections, taking with it homes, bridges and roads and leaving behind a mud-covered path of destruction.

Some 3,000 of 4,200 buildings along the River Ahr were damaged, according to the German government. At least 766 people were injured. A third of the population saw their homes either completely destroyed or left with significant damage.

"This night, it was like madness," Karl-Heinz Grimm, whose parents were affected by the flooding, told The Associated Press at the time.

Parts of Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands were also flooded.

Up to 7 inches of rain fell in some areas.

While several factors played a role, the disaster was made more likely by climate change fueled by global warming, according to World Weather Attribution, a panel of scientists that analyzes the role of climate change in extreme weather events.

As average surface temperatures rise, more water evaporates from land. That puts more moisture in the atmosphere, which can lead to more precipitation.

Research has shown that this type of flooding event is likely to become more common in Europe and other parts of the world.
