The October full moon graced the skies Sunday evening into Monday, giving stargazers the chance to photograph the spectacle. Images show the moon from different locations around the world.

The moon reached maximum illumination just before 5. p.m. on Sunday, while it was below the horizon. To many, it may have appeared larger and more orange as it was viewed close to the horizon. According to Space.com, this is called the "moon illusion." The coloring is due to the fact that light reflecting toward Earth passes through more of the atmosphere lower in the sky than when the moon is overhead. Most of the blue photons bounce before hitting the human eye, but red photons with longer wavelengths pass through to viewers.

The moon's large appearance is due to its fullness at the horizon. Comparatively, next to objects on the horizon such as buildings and trees, the moon seems quite large. But as the moon ascends into the sky, it is dwarfed by the horizon and the vast, surrounding sky.

Sunday's moon was the Hunter's Moon, which was named by the Native Americans as the brightness of the moon was a good time for hunting in preparation for the cold months. The Hunter's Moon is the first full moon following the Harvest Moon, which is the first full moon after the autumnal equinox. Some years, the October full moon is closer to the equinox, in which case, that moon is called the Harvest Moon, the September full moon is named the Corn Moon and the November full moon becomes the Hunter's Moon. These are the only two moons tied to astronomical events, and as such, are the only two moon names that do not always occur in specific months.
