A​ winter storm dumped more than 7 inches of heavy, wet snow on the Intermountain West Wednesday night into Thursday morning, shutting down a major interstate in Colorado and knocking out power to thousands in the state.

T​he storm was named Winter Storm Gael by The Weather Channel.

P​hotos show downed tree branches and cars covered in snow in Denver as residents worked to remove the accumulation from sidewalks and driveways.

T​he snow fell at rates up to 2 inches per hour, trapping vehicles on roads for hours in some cases. More than 100 miles of Interstate 70 in Colorado were shut due to the storm and several accidents were reported along I-70 and I-25

T​he storm tapered off Thursday morning, but n​early 5,000 customers were still without power Thursday afternoon, according to poweroutage.com.
