Photos are surfacing of Mount Kilauea's summit aglow after a new eruption broke out at the Halema'uma'u crater Thursday evening.

The U.S. Geological Survey raised the alert level earlier Thursday as Kilauea was showing signs that magma was moving below the summit's surface.

The eruption is not a threat to any residential areas, and is contained to the crater, The U.S. Geological Survey reported. By late Thursday, the lava had spread to about 300 acres, or nearly half a square mile, according to officials.

The volcano, which is located on Hawaii's Big Island inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The volcano was erupting for more than a year before pausing in December 2022, about the same time that Mauna Loa stopped erupting after showing activity since November.
