More than 19,300 people have been killed after a powerful earthquake struck Turkey and Syria Monday, making the temblor the deadliest in over a decade.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck west of the city of Gaziantep in southern central Turkey at 4:17 a.m. Monday local time. Another powerful earthquake struck about 60 miles northeast of Gaziantep at 1:24 p.m. Monday local time. The second earthquake was a magnitude 7.5, and was one of more than 200 aftershocks felt since the first quake.

Tens of thousands of people have been reported injured throughout Turkey and Syria, with the majority of those injuries occurring in Turkey, and thousands of buildings have collapsed throughout Turkey.

Photos show collapsed buildings and cars crushed underneath the rubble in both Turkey and Syria, as well as rescuers working to free trapped individuals.
