W​inter Storm Olive is spreading snow from the Northern Plains to the upper Midwest Thursday, causing power outages, flight delays and road closures.

A​ firefighter who worked for the Paw Paw fire department in Van Buren County, Michigan, was killed by a power line that was knocked down by ice, according to the Associated Press.

T​he snowstorm has caused major damage to Michigan's power infrastructure, and more than 790,000 customers are without power in the state, according to PowerOutage.us. Throughout the U.S., about 1 million customers are without power across six states.

P​hotos show snow locals clearing sidewalks in Pierre, South Dakota, as well as heavy snowfall in Salt Lake City, Utah, and other areas of the Rockies. The photos above also show snow in Minneapolis, where it could be one of the heaviest snowstorms in years. The National Weather Service called Olive a "historic winter storm" for the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

T​he last time Minneapolis received snowfall comparable to what Olive is packing for the area, in 2010, the city's Metrodome collapsed. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed an emergency order ahead of Olive to activate the Nation Guard.

M​ore than 500 flights were canceled Thursday due to the winter storm, and hundreds of others were delayed in and out of major cities including Minneapolis-St. Paul, Chicago. Dozens of miles of I-90 are closed Thursday morning from the South Dakota border to exit 43 near Worthington, Minnesota, where whiteout conditions were occurring.

Blizzard warnings have been posted for parts of the Northern Plains and upper Midwest and winter weather advisories have been issued for those regions, as well as parts of the Northeast.
