W​inter Storm Piper is spreading rain and snow throughout the Northeast Tuesday after bringing feet of snow to California's mountain towns over the weekend. T​he National Weather Service said it was one of the strongest storms to hit Southern California.

S​o far, 8 inches of snow was measured near Plainfield, Massachusetts, and 1.8 inches of snow has fallen New York City as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, the city's first inch of snowfall of the season. Several inches of additional snowfall are expected from eastern New York into New England Tuesday.

P​iper became historic in Oregon after bringing just under 11 inches of snow to the Portland metro area last week, the second highest snowfall in the city for any single day. The snowstorm created travel chaos, stranding motorists around Portland due to the heavy snowfall.

P​hotos show how the storm affected the country as it moved from the Pacific Northwest to California, where it dumped feet of snow even in low elevations, and then headed eastward.

More than 66,000 people were still without power in California early Tuesday afternoon due to the storm, according to PowerOutage.us.
