Here's What The Sierra Looked Like As More Snow Headed In Tuesday (PHOTOS)

A​nother winter storm is dumping feet of snow in California's Sierra this week, a region that is already buried in snow high enough to reach rooftops.

P​hotos show the tremendous snow accumulation in Mammoth Lakes, California. Snow banks tower above residents as they dig out some of the new snow brought to the area on Tuesday.

T​he state has now had its highest snowpack since the 1980s. An increasing number snowpack survey sites over the years has made it difficult to accurately compare snow measurements across the decades, KTVU reported.

"This year will certainly be in the top three or four snowpack years since the 1950s," Sean de Guzman, manager of DWR's Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Unit, told KTVU

T​he storm is headed into Southern California on Wednesday, packing rain, high mountain snow and wind. Snow is expected to continue in Northern California's high country. The storm is also expected to bring moderate snowfall to Utah's mountains, Idaho and northern Arizona Wednesday night into Thursday.

T​he storm will then head east, spreading snow across parts of the Northern Plains, upper Midwest and Great Lakes later in the week.
