Parts of South Florida are dealing with widespread flooding on Thursday morning after torrential rains inundated the region. The flooding forced the closure of Fort-Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which is expected to remain closed through 9 a.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service Miami office declared a flash flood emergency around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Rain was falling at rates above 3 inches per hour at some times on Wednesday, producing totals beyond 20 inches in a matter of hours in some locations.

Motorists were stranded on streets for hours Wednesday evening as floodwaters rose near the airport and people tried to leave the shuttered facility.

A​n EF0 tornado touched down in the city of Dania Beach, about halfway between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, damaging about a dozen homes. No injuries were reported.
