Spain is sweltering as an early heat wave is bringing temperatures the country normally doesn't see until summer. The image above shows a coachman taking a quick refreshment break on Wednesday as temperatures in Seville reached 98.6 degrees.

"A record-breaking heat wave that's gripping the Iberian Peninsula sent temperatures soaring as hot as 99 degrees on Wednesday in southern Spain," weather.com digital meteorologist Chris Dolce explained. "Even hotter temperatures are possible Thursday and Friday as the hot air from Africa continues to sear the region under a dome of high pressure."

State weather office AEMET reported that temperatures could hit 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in the southern Guadalquivir Valley later this week.
