A​ tornado struck the unincorporated community of Laguna Heights, Texas, on Saturday, leaving behind major damage and killing at least one person.

A​s many as 60 homes were damaged by the twister which struck the community near South Padre Island shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday morning. At least 10 people were hospitalized, with two in critical condition, according to Cameron County emergency management coordinator Tom Hushen. Many other residents, who were likely sleeping when the late-warned tornado struck, sustained minor injuries, the Associated Press reported.

R​oberto Flores, 42, was killed when his mobile home was badly damaged in the tornado.

T​he tornado was given a preliminary EF1 rating, making it the first EF1 tornado Cameron County since 1997. T​he county issued a disaster declaration for the town, and a temporary shelter has been opened in nearby Port Isabel, where 38 people have sought aid.
