T​rees are down and buildings damaged after Storm Poly, the strongest summer storm on record in the Netherlands, slammed the northern part of the country on Wednesday. At least one person died in the Netherlands and another in Germany as the storm moved to the northeast.

P​hotos show trees on buildings and vehicles in Haarlem, Netherlands, and a tree-damaged houseboat in Amsterdam, as well as toppled beach huts. Winds in some areas gusted up to 90 mph.

A​ woman was killed in Haarlem when a tree fell on a car, police spokesperson Nina Moers told the Associated Press. Another woman died in Rhede, Germany, on the Germany-Netherlands border, after a tree feel on her.

Amsterdam's airport canceled more than 300 flights and train service was halted in northern Netherlands due to the storm. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute issued a code red alert in three provinces, the highest-level weather alert.

T​he storm is now affecting Germany and is expected to hit Denmark as well.
