Wildfires continue to threaten Canadian residents, and the Yellowknife Fire in the country’s Northwest Territories has forced Canada’s largest wildfire evacuation of the year.

Thousands have fled from the city of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories. The fire was threatening to shut down the only route out of the city Thursday night as firefighters worked against the blaze to keep the route open, the Associated Press reported.

The fire, bolstered by northwest winds and minimal rainfall, could reach the city limits by the weekend, according to emergency officials. Possible rain Friday likely won’t be enough to make a big dent in the blaze, officials said.

The fire is just one of thousands that have made this season the worst Canadian wildfire season on record. The country has seen more than 5,700 fires this year, which have burned more than 53,000 square miles, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. More than 1,000 wildfires are currently active in Canada.

In West Kelowna, British Columbia, more than 7,000 properties have been issued evacuation orders or alerts as another fire, dubbed the McDougall Creek Fire, burns. The fire has already destroyed several structures.
