Photos Show Destruction In Morocco After Major Earthquake

M​ore than 2,900 people are reported dead after a major earthquake struck Morocco late Friday night. Another 2,501 people were injured in the quake according to Morocco's government.

T​he 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck at 11:11 p.m. local time about 43 miles south of the city of Marrakech.

P​hotos show streets full of rubble and heavily damaged buildings in some of the country's hardest hit areas. Officials were still assessing the damage and survivors continued to dig through rubble in Morocco's remote mountain villages, where death tolls are expected to rise.

T​he Associated Press reported that most of the destruction and deaths occurred in Al Haouz province located in the High Atlas Mountains.

W​hile the earthquake was the strongest to hit Morocco in 120 years, the country's deadliest earthquake was was a 5.8-magnitude temblor that killed at least 12,000 people in 1960. The AP reported that construction regulations did change after the disaster, but many buildings and rural homes are still not built to withstand powerful earthquakes.
