A​t least seven are dead and nine were left missing after flooding struck the Mexican state of Jalisco this week.

T​he Jalocote stream burst its banks early Monday, damaging roads and destroying homes in the community of El Jalocote, a small town of just over 200 residents, in Autlan de Navarro, after heavy rain fell in the region Monday, the Associated Press reported.

E​mergency responders flocked to the scene and were able to rescue three people from the floodwater, Jalisco Gov. Enrique Alfaro said.

Gustavo Robles, who heads the municipality of Autlan de Navarro, called the destructive rainfall "atypical" in a Monday press conference. T​he water receded later in the day on Monday as search efforts continued.

The floods wreaked havoc as a landslide killed three people, including a child, in Guatemala's capital city. The landslide was triggered by heavy rain early Monday morning.
