P​arts of New York City were under water on Friday as a pair of storms merged and dumped rain on the region.

P​hotos show cars submerged in deep floodwaters and a closed section of the Prospect Expressway due to flooding.

G​ov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley as the rain continued to fall Friday and floodwaters continued to rise. New Jersey's Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for New Jersey as well due to flash flooding in the state.

At least eight subway lines have seen service disruption due to flooding, New York Metropolitan Transit Authority reported. Videos on social media showed water pouring into subway stations throughout the five boroughs.

T​here are reports of emergency responders finding people trapped in basement apartments, one reason why Hurricane Ida was so deadly in the New York metro area.
