Beryl made landfall on the Texas Coast as a Category 1 hurricane Monday morning, forcing a flash flood warning for the entire Houston metro area and leaving more than 2 million customers without power in the state, according to PowerOutage.com.

A​t least eight people in the U.S. have died due to Beryl. Seven deaths occurred in Texas and one in Louisiana.

B​eryl was classified as a tropical depression as of Monday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Before its march to Texas, the storm hit Jamaica Wednesday afternoon, bringing wind gusts up to 67 mph. Beryl first made landfall July 1 on Carriacou, Grenada, as a Category 4 storm.

B​eryl left behind damaged fishing vessels, collapsed roofs and dangerous storm surge flooding throughout the Windward Islands, including Barbados, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. At least 11 people were killed in the Caribbean, including three of whom were in Venezuela.

B​eryl was the earliest Atlantic Basin hurricane to reach Category 5 intensity on record. The storm is expected to track inland this week, bringing heavy rains and gusty winds from the Mississippi Valley up into the Northeast.
