Three people have been killed in floodwaters from a strong storm that pounded Australia's east coast over the weekend.

New South Wales state police say the body of a 65-year-old man was found on Monday in a car in a creek near the town of Bowral, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of Sydney. The body of another man was found in a truck swept away by floodwaters in the southwest Sydney suburb of Leppington. In the nation's capital, Canberra, a 37-year-old man died after his car was also caught in floodwaters.

The storm whipped up waves as high as 12 meters (40 feet), which caused serious beach erosion and forced hundreds of coastal residents to evacuate.

Police and tow truck drivers pulled dozens of motorists from their vehicles after a tidal surge swallowed low-lying streets at Kirra on the southern Gold Coast, according to ABC. Hundreds of roads across southeast Queensland were blocked off by downed trees. Tens of thousands were without power.

High winds and heavy rains were to persist through Monday, forecasters said.
