One of the U.S.'s most iconic roadways was closed when a landslide buried California's Highway 1 near Big Sur this weekend.

Officials said that the road was covered in 30 to 40 feet of dirt, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"[We were] forced to turn around due to landslides so we missed half the coast," tourist Jill Crockford posted on her Instagram.

This winter was one of the wettest in decades for California, which has triggered landslides along the coast. Previous smaller slides had closed a portion of Highway 1 before this weekend's event.
