A discarded piano. Living room furniture. Once-loved books and toys. These piles of debris serve as unwanted reminders of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, weeks after the storm made landfall on August 25, swamping neighborhoods in Houston and forcing residents to leave their homes.

In some neighborhoods in the Briar Forest and Energy Corridor areas of Houston, debris—remnants of items destroyed by floodwaters—are piled up and down the streets and driveways. Some piles tower over the residents themselves.

Photographer Seph Lawless, known for documenting abandoned buildings and ghost towns, traveled to Houston between September 7 -12 to capture images of homes and neighborhoods, many of which were virtual ghost towns in the wake of Harvey. He found some neighborhoods still flooded, and even shot some photos from inside a raft with a homeowner surveying his flooded home.

"It was challenging to shoot for obvious reasons," said Lawless, who found flooded highways, streets, submerged cars (he was able to photograph the interior of a BMW that was completely submerged in water), flooded homes, and complete neighborhoods gutted and personal belongings scattered about.
