Multiple large tornadoes were in progress Tuesday across southeastern Louisiana, where dozens of homes were damaged and several were injured.

The dangerous storms approached areas in and around New Orleans late Tuesday morning. One twister was spawned north of Lake Pontchartrain, where structural damage was confirmed and at least two people were hurt.

But it was in New Orleans East where some of the worst damage was observed. In that area, at least 60 homes and businesses were damaged, and at least 20 injuries were reported. Included in the damage was NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility and the USDA's National Finance Center's Primary Business Center. The buildings are located adjacent to one another in Michoud.

The New Orleans East tornado was rated EF3 by the National Weather Service, making it the strongest tornado to hit Orleans Parish since records began in 1950.

Following the storms, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency and surveyed the damage.
