Smithsonian.com has announced 70 finalists in it's 14th annual photo contest.

With photos ranging from travel, to nature and beyond, Smithsonian.com has announced 70 finalists in it's 14th annual photo contest.

Submissions ran from March 22, 2016 through November 30, 2016, and received over 48,000 submissions from photographers in 146 countries and territories. The contest had seven categories: Natural World, The American Experience, Travel, People, Altered Images, Mobile and Sustainable Travel. The finalists were announced on Tuesday, February 28, with 10 finalists per category.

Finalists include stunning images from around the world, including a photo of an octopus catching a ride on the back of a sea turtle in Hawaii, as captured by photographer Michael B. Hardie for the Natural World category. Other notable images include stormy skies over Scotland's Old Man of Storr, as well as an elderly man smoking on the back of his oxen taxi at the white temple of Mingun in Myanmar.

Voting for Readers' Choice opened on Tuesday as well, and will remain available until Monday, March 17. Voters may cast one vote per day until closing. The Grand Prize, Readers' Choice and seven category winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 28. On the same day, the 15th Annual Photo Contest will open for submissions.
