The Creepy, Abandoned Mansions of Europe (PHOTOS)

The castle-like estates in the slideshow above used to be the homes of Europe's elite and uber-rich. Austrian photographer Stefan Baumann traveled around the continent documenting the mansions, which were abandoned for various reasons, from earthquake damage to financial troubles.

"Through my pictures I try to give an insight into what would have been noble and powerful lives," Baumann said. "You can see the fallen insignia of power and wealth and long gone glory days as well as great artistic work, created by the best architects of that time."

The photographer was struck by the amount of abandoned luxury homes he was able to find after just beginning to research estates throughout Europe.

"The more countries I visited, the humbler I became in face of the wasted architectural beauties," Baumann said.
