The earthquake occurred at 10:22 p.m. off Yamagata in the Sea of Japan, and a tsunami warning was lifted hours after it was issued along coastal regions by Japan's meteorological agency.

Niigata Prefecture and Yamagata Prefecture saw the most damage from the quake, including landslides in Murakami and Tsuruoka. A large landslide closed Japan National Route 345 near Murakami, according to Shingetsu News.

The local meteorological agency warned of potential building collapse, more landslides and possible similar quakes in the area in the following week as heavy rain is expected, The Japan Times reported.
