At least 37 are dead, including several children, and more than 700 injured after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Tuesday.

The quake struck about 2 miles southeast of the Mirpur district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir at 4:01 p.m. local time, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake left homes and buildings badly damaged and large cracks in roads. A main road near Mirpur was left damaged, causing accidents and knocking buses and other vehicles off the road.

According to the AP, Raja Qaiser, a deputy commissioner in the region, said that rescue workers are transporting victims to hospitals throughout Mirpur, where a state of emergency was declared.

In Islamabad, Pakistan's capital, the tremor could be felt and people rushed out of buildings into the street for safety. The earthquake was also felt in the northwest and in locations in eastern Punjab province, the AP reported.
