Puerto Rico has been reeling from a series of earthquakes since the end of December, and Saturday doled out another earthquake for the island. The 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck around 7:15 a.m. near Ponce, Puerto Rico, the epicentre of the previous quakes.

The earthquake is just another kick to the island which still has not fully recovered from Hurricane Maria which devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, and is struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic as people remain in shelters from previous quakes.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths, but at least 50 families have been displaced by the temblor.

Puerto Rico is in the midst of a two-month lockdown as COVID-19 sweeps the globe. Gov. Wanda Vázquez urged residents to take caution and to remain calm in a tweet: "If your infrastructure is damaged, you must leave with your face mask on and your emergency backpack."

Vázquez also urged those who would normally volunteer to stay home.

“We're up against an emergency situation, but we can't forget that the most lethal one we have in our hands is COVID-19,” Vázquez said.

At least 17 other temblors were felt throughout the day on Saturday, measuring between 2.5 and 4.6 magnitude.
