A 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea Saturday morning (5:51 a.m. EST Saturday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A tsunami threat has been issued by The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for areas closest to the epicenter.

The tremor occurred at a depth of 64 miles, the USGS also reported. The quake's epicenter was 29 miles east of Taron in Papua New Guinea.
