Earthquake Information

The temblor struck at 11:13 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (12:13 p.m. EDT) just off the Pacific coast of western Panama, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was about 36 miles south of David, the country's third-largest city.

Reports to the USGS "Did You Feel It?" Web page, as well as on Twitter, indicated shaking was felt across a broad swath of Panama and neighboring Costa Rica, including the countries' respective capitals, San Jose and Panama City.

Panamanian newspaper La Prensa said the earthquake was felt for at least 30 seconds in many areas and briefly interrupted telephone service.

Photos posted to Twitter purported to show objects knocked off of shelves in the city of David as a result of the tremor.

Panama's head of emergency services, Arturo Alvarado, told Reuters there were no reports of damage, but that schools and homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

No tsunami advisories were issued.
