A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Sunday near Cushing, Oklahoma, where it caused significant damage to 40-50 buildings, forced evacuations and prompted school closures.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor occurred at 7:44 p.m. CST at a depth of 3.1 miles. The quake's epicenter was 1.2 miles west of Cushing in central Oklahoma. The quake was reportedly felt as far away as Kansas City, Missouri, and Arkansas, the Associated Press reported.

An official told AP Monday that at least 40 to 50 buildings in Cushing sustained "substantial damage" as a result of the trembler.

During a news conference late Sunday, Cushing Assistant City Manager Jeremy Frazier said a few minor injuries were reported, according to NBC News.

Frazier said that damage reported in Cushing was primarily in the downtown area. The city has a population of about 7,900 and is home to the Cushing Tank Farm, a massive oil storage facility that's touted as the world's largest. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission and the Oklahoma Geological Survey reported that the OCC's Pipeline Safety Department has been in contact with pipeline operators at the facility and that there have been no immediate reports of any problems from the earthquake.

According to Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Keli Caint, at least one senior living complex was evacuated. Those residents were transported to a youth center gymnasium, CNN reports.

For authorities to assess any damage to local school buildings, Cushing Public Schools officials canceled Monday classes.

This is the second earthquake to rattle the state this month. A record-breaking 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Pawnee on Nov. 2 and was felt in at least seven states.
