Tsunamis are most often caused by large earthquakes, but there can be other sources. The sea floor is disrupted which displaces the ocean water. Waves then start to race outward, at several hundred miles per hour. Once the waves reach shallow water near the coast, the waves slow and the height builds, increasing the threat for flooding and inundation. If a tsunami warning is issued, move to higher ground immediately.
