Officials were forced to shut down Richmond International Airport for more than two hours and numerous roadways were closed Friday morning as the city experienced its second-wettest day on record.

Airport officials announced the closure Friday morning as parts of the runway flooded, and the entry to an on-site parking deck was also inundated. The airport resumed operations at 9 a.m. EDT.

Road closures were also reported in the area as several major highways, including Interstate 64, were covered in floodwaters, according to WWBT-TV.

From midnight to 6 a.m. Friday, 7.25 inches of rain fell at the airport, according to the National Weather Service. This tops the record for wettest June calendar day on record and is the second-highest single-day rainfall total for the city, said weather.com meteorologist Linda Lam. The current record is 8.79 inches, which fell on Aug. 12, 1955.

"A mostly stationary front was draped across portions of the Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic, including the Richmond area, early Friday," Lam added. "This boundary was the focus for showers and thunderstorms. One particular thunderstorm brought intense rainfall to the Richmond area, where more than 7 inches of rain fell from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Friday."

Northwest of Richmond, water rescues were reported in the town of Louisa, the NWS also said. Passengers in seven vehicles in Henrico also had to be rescued, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
