Residents were ordered to flee the small town of Arborfield, Saskatchewan, Canada, Tuesday afternoon as floodwaters forced the breach of a "hold back road" and began moving toward the west side of town.

Officials went door-to-door Tuesday to tell some 400 residents that they needed to evacuate, according to Global News. Local states of emergency were declared for the towns of Arborfield and Carrot River, which is located to the northeast, Global News also said.

The breach, about 100 feet wide, is located south of the town, according to CBC. The water was expected to arrive in Arborfield as early as Tuesday evening, the report added.

Residents told CBC reporter Devin Heroux that they hadn't slept in two days as they worked around-the-clock to prepare for the imminent flooding. Heavy rainfall swamped the area, flooding some spots and pushing Carrot River's sewer system to the brink. In fact, residents were asked to limit their use of dishwashers, washing machines and showers, Global News reported.

Nearly a square mile of water was being held back prior to the breach, CBC also said. Authorities are sending residents to nearby towns that aren't affected by the flooding until it's safe to return to their homes.
