Downtown Charleston, and nearby communities, were innundated with heavy rain Thursday, causing street flooding.

Heavy rain slammed Charleston, South Carolina, Thursday, flooding streets and sending tourists seeking umbrellas.

The rain started around sunrise, leading to 5.5 inches by 6 p.m., according to weather.com meteorologist Chrissy Warrilow. Parts of the county saw even more. Warrilow said 7.7 inches fell at James Island.

A flash flood warning was posted through at least 7:30 p.m. local time, but has expired. Scattered storms are in the forecast through the weekend.
