Five teens were rescued from a flooded creek in Dallas Thursday.

Heavy rains hit the metro around 10 a.m. local time, overflowing creeks and streams. Police believe the boys had skipped school and were playing in a drainage tunnel just as the water started rising, according to the Associated Press.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans told the Dallas Morning News the teens held onto trees and shrubs along the water until rescuers could get to them.

The kids were taken to a hospital for evaluation. All were reportedly "awake and alert."

"While technically 'non-severe', a training band of heavy rain parked over the east side of the Dallas metro, with estimates of 3-5 inches of rain in three hours," explained weather.com senior meteorologist Jon Erdman.

The heavy rain also knocked out power to a few thousand customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
