A plodding system left flooding from the Midwest to the Northeast through Friday night, prompting water rescues, evacuations and road closures over a broad swath of the country.

Here is a rundown of the states affected by flooding.

Washington D.C.

Heavy rainfall during the early morning hours into the morning rush Friday contributed to multiple road closures in the D.C. metro area.

The District Department of Transportation reported that the heavy rain was creating "high water conditions throughout the District." According to NBC 4, there were several water rescues in Montgomery County alone from drivers trying to navigate the high waters in the area.

Friday evening, the National Park Service said some parks in and around Washington may be closed because of flooding over the weekend. According to the Washington Post, many local rivers will flood this weekend.

Maryland

The state transit authority suspended MARC commuter train service at Martinsburg and Brunswick due to downed trees on the tracks. Approximately 9,300 people were without power across the state as of 7:18 a.m., local time, according to the Associated Press. Some of those outages have since been restored.

Pennsylvania

A mudslide closed a road in Lincoln Borough, and flash flooding closed state Route 381 in Ligonier Township, about 45 miles east of Pittsburgh. Nearly 30 residents were evacuated in Washington, Pennsylvania after heavy rains damaged an apartment building roof.

Virginia

Schools in Shenandoah, Warren and Frederick Counties were closed Friday due to storms, NBC 4 reports. In Charlottesville, officials reported road damage, downed trees and dozens of closed roads. At a youth camp near Palmyra, nine horses were stranded by flood waters near the Rivanna River. Workers moved the animals to a pasture by Friday afternoon.

About 1,800 Dominion Virginia Power customers lost power.

West Virginia

High water has prompted multiple road closures across the state Friday morning.

Illinois

Dozens of vehicles were stranded and schools were closed in the Chicago suburb of Lake Bluff, which experienced some of the worst flooding from thunderstorms that socked northeast Illinois.

Authorities shut down a section of U.S. highway 41 in the Lake County village. The National Weather Service says a flash flood filled the roadway with 10 feet of water in one spot beneath a railroad underpass late Monday night.

By Tuesday morning, the road looked more like a river, with the tops of abandoned cars and traffic signs jutting out above the water.

A truck driver stranded since 8 p.m. Monday told WFLD TV he was told by about 11 p.m. that no traffic would move and motorists "might as well lie down and sleep."

Des Plaines also experienced flooding.

Michigan

Flooding from heavy rainfall over the past couple of days also is bringing flooding worries to some parts of the state.

The Grand Rapids Press reports that a flood advisory has been issued for the area surrounding the Ionia County Fairgrounds. The Grand River is just over 13 feet and approaching flood stage. The newspaper reports that the river is expected crest Thursday evening at 16 feet.

New York

Most roads reopened after serious flooding in Penn Yann, 45 miles southeast of Rochester, but the storm system sparked additional flooding Friday morning in the hard hit town.

A state of emergency has already been declared in parts of a county in the Finger Lakes region after flash flooding caused by heavy rains forced evacuations and closed roads.

Yates County officials declared the emergency Wednesday after severe thunderstorms dumped at least five inches of rain late Tuesday and early Wednesday morning.

A camp for children and families impacted by cancer in Branchport, experienced tens of thousands of dollars in damage from the flooding. Cabins were flooded by the water, causing an estimated $60,000 in damage, reports the Associated Press.

Ohio

A longtime Cleveland TV meteorologist had to be rescued after rising water swamped his car on a highway exit ramp this week.

Eighty-three-year-old Dick Goddard, a local weatherman for more than 50 years, says he thought he was going to "buy the farm" when water flooded his car on an Interstate 71 exit south of Cleveland during heavy rain Monday night.

Goddard -- who was talking on the air about the rain before leaving work at WJW-TV -- was trapped for about 45 minutes before firefighters in a rubber boat reached his car, broke the window and pulled him out. He was treated for hypothermia.

Goddard tells The Medina Gazette the water was up to his chin. He credits firefighters with saving his life.

Flash flood warnings were issued for areas in and around Cleveland Monday night as heavy rainfall moved slowly through the suburbs. Authorities responded to numerous flooding complaints and traffic accidents Monday night as a result of the weather, Cleveland.com reports.

"The radar estimated rainfall over 2 inches over a short period of time in a swath from northern Lorain County into western Cuyahoga, Medina and Summit counties," said Erdman.

Several roads in northern Ohio were closed due to standing water Monday night, while other areas urged drivers to stay off the roads, with the exception of emergencies, said Cleveland.com. Still, police officers had to deal with the frustrations of some residents ignoring their warnings.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued 10 tornado warnings for its area of responsibility in northern Ohio. On Tuesday, the office confirmed an EF1 tornado struck Eaton Township in Lorain County Monday evening, causing some tree and roof damage. Nick Wiltgen, weather.com meteorologist, said it was the state's third and strongest confirmed tornado of 2014; a pair of EF0 twisters hit central and western Ohio Feb. 20-21.

Pennsylvania

Dozens of flights were delayed or canceled at Philadelphia International Airport Friday afternoon as heavy rain moved through the region. Rising waters also caused travel problems for trolleys and the Norristown High Speed Line trains, Philly.com reports. Several area schools were forced to move graduation events due to the rain showers.

Texas

Street flooding was reported Tuesday in the Houston and San Antonio areas where storms left thousands of homes and businesses without electricity.

CenterPoint Energy had about 2,800 power outages Tuesday afternoon as crews worked to restore power following rain that slowed Houston-area traffic. CPS Energy reported about 3,200 homes and businesses without power mainly in the San Antonio area.

Dallas-based Oncor reported about 3,500 customers without electricity from storms that began Monday night and lingered into Tuesday.

Two Fort Worth firefighters were seriously hurt Monday when they were in an attic and the floor collapsed during a blaze at a house that was struck by lightning.
