Hurricane Lane dumped feet of rain on Hawaii, which triggered flooding, water rescues and evacuations on the Big Island as rainfall totals exceeded 50 inches in some areas.

The storm was blamed for one death on the island of Kauai, where 30-year-old Joshua Bradbury was found dead Wednesday in a flooded stream in Koloa. Authorities told the Associated Press it's believed Bradbury jumped into the stream in an attempt to save a dog.

Severe flooding was also reported on parts of the Big Island, like Hilo, where homes were swamped and dozens of residents had to be evacuated. More than three feet of rain fell upslope of Hilo, and as that water ran downhill, major flooding resulted, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday morning, another threat emerged in the early-morning hours on the island of Maui – a brush fire that destroyed 3 square miles and more than 20 homes. The blaze forced evacuations of at least 100 Lahaina houses as it grew rapidly near a residential area. Later Friday morning, two more fires were sparked in parts of western Maui.

The island also saw big rainfall totals which triggered flooding and mudslides, some of which shut down roads.
