Tropical Storm Olivia Pushes Through Hawaii With Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds

Tropical Storm Olivia brought heavy rain and strong wind gusts to the Hawaiian Islands where it made landfall on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Olivia's circulation center moved over Maui and Lanai early Wednesday with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

Tropical Storm Olivia made landfall early Wednesday on Maui and Lanai.

One location on Maui reported just over 8 inches of rain in the 24 hours ending 12 a.m. HST Thursday, Sept. 13.

Flooding was reported on Maui and several homes had to evacuate along the Honoapiilani Highway due to a rising nearby river.

Wind gusts up to 55 mph were reported in Lanai while Honolulu saw a wind gust of 41 mph Wednesday morning. 

Several large trees were knocked down in Honolulu and in Maui County.

Olivia is the fourth tropical cyclone to track near Hawaii in just over a month. Lane formed in late August. Hector passed south of the Big Island in early August, and Hector passed safely north of Hawaii last week.

Hurricane Lane wrung out several feet of rain in some higher elevations of Hawaii, including one total of over 50 inches on the Big Island, making it the third-wettest tropical cyclone in U.S. history.

Hilo, one of America's wettest cities, was swamped with significant flooding from Lane.
