Residents and tourists in Mexico's Los Cabos resort area were hunkered down Friday as they waited for the arrival of Hurricane Lorena.

The storm was forecast to pass near the southern Baja California Peninsula Friday night and into Saturday morning. A hurricane warning was in effect from La Paz to Puerto Cortes, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The area is home to the popular Cabo San Lucas resorts, where owners were pulling their boats from the water and visitors were preparing to ride out the storm in their hotels.

"We are taking preventive measures," Baja California Sur state government secretary-general Álvaro de la Peña said. "Rations, gasoline, all supplies are guaranteed. There is no need for panic buying."

Webcams in the area and video posted to social media showed darkened skies and heavy surf Friday afternoon.

More than 780 people were in shelters Friday morning, according to the AP. Residents in low-lying areas were encouraged to evacuate. Some tourists were still strolling the streets, while others had retreated to their rooms.

"We arrived on Monday and we hope to leave Sunday. ... We hope there aren't big problems," Minerva Smith, a traveler from California, told the AP.

Others lamented their luck at vacationing during a potential hurricane.

Airlines including Delta and American were offering free itinerary changes through Saturday to passengers flying to or from Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.

Up to 8 inches of rain flooded streets, washed out roads and created minor mudslides when Lorena came onshore Thursday in the western Mexican state of Colima, according to the AP. Trees were down and power outages were reported.

There were no reports of injuries or significant structural damage.
