Lava has destroyed hundreds of homes on Hawaii's Big Island as Kilauea Volcano continues to erupt.

On Saturday, a small explosion on the summit of the volcano triggered a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. No damage was reported from the tremor that was felt as far away as Hilo.

More than 600 homes have been destroyed from lava flowing from the 24 fissures that have opened up over the course of the past month, including a home located in Vacationland that belongs to Big Island Mayor Harry Kim, Hawaii County Civil Defense spokeswoman Janet Snyder told reporters.

Nearly a mile of new land was formed by the lava that flowed from Kilauea towards Kapoho Bay, the Associated Press reported.

In a week's time, authorities told the Associated Press that they've arrested 18 people for loitering in the disaster area that is off-limits to the public, and several others have been cited after they needed to be rescued after refusing to leave their homes.

Some evacuees have been in shelters for weeks, sleeping in tents as they wait for word about whether or not their homes are in the path of the fast-moving lava.
