Sunday’s eruption of Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire killed at least 75 people and nearly 200 are still missing, according to officials. Rescuers are still struggling to locate people due to homes and roads being completely covered in volcanic ash. The terrain was also too hot after the eruption for rescue crews to search, decreasing the likelihood of finding people alive.

More smoke rose from the volcano Tuesday and Wednesday, forcing additional evacuations and rescue workers fleeing for cover from the ash, molten mud and rocks falling down the mountain.

“There’s hope,” Firefighter Rigoberto Ramirez told CNN. “It’s dangerous, but we go anyway.”

Rescuers are currently waiting for authorities to declare whether it is safe or not to resume searching for any survivors or bodies.

The region that was once rich of color was reduced to a blanket of grey dust. From above, the southern-central region of Guatemala looks like a black and white image, something you’d expect to be retouched.
