Here Are 3 Storm Systems We're Watching in the Week Ahead

An active week of weather is ahead as three more storm systems bring rain, snow or thunderstorms to much of the country.

1. Tuesday: Quick Shot of Rain, Then Lake-Effect Snow and Cold

A fast-moving low-pressure system will bring a line of showers and storms to the Northeast as it races eastward through southern Canada.

The cold front will begin producing rain in western portions of New York and Pennsylvania and down into the central Appalachians on Tuesday morning, then move eastward throughout Tuesday. There could be a few strong to severe storms with damaging wind gusts from parts of central New England to the mid-Atlantic.

Rain could turn over to snow in the higher elevations of New York and New England as this system sweeps eastward. Snowfall amounts are expected to be light in most areas.

Winds will be gusty as this system moves through, and some gusts over 40 mph are possible. Some sloshing of the Great Lakes is also possible.

Temperatures will also take a quick dip Tuesday night into Wednesday. Morning lows are expected to be 10 to 20 degrees below average Wednesday morning, which translates to lows in the mid- to upper 20s in most spots in the interior Northeast, and the lower to mid-30s along the coast and in many of the big cities. Morning lows in parts of the mid-Atlantic could dip into the upper 30s.

2. Return of Severe Weather Midweek in the South

Another round of severe storms could impact parts of the South midweek as a new low-pressure system develops and tracks eastward.

This system should have a similar track across the South as the last few, meaning moisture and heat should accumulate south and ahead of the storm's track as it heads eastward.

A few severe storms could develop by Tuesday or Tuesday night from northeast New Mexico into central Oklahoma.

The threat of strong to severe storms will expand on Wednesday and Wednesday night, from parts of Texas and Oklahoma to the lower Mississippi Valley. Some severe weather could impact other parts of the Southeast on Thursday, but details are uncertain at this time.

This system could also raise the risk of localized flash flooding in the South.

3. New System from the Northwest Could Bring Rain to Midwest and East

A low-pressure system will arrive in the Pacific Northwest early Wednesday, then slide through the Rockies on Thursday.

This should be a nuisance system for much of the West, bringing mainly light rain and snow amounts. Snow levels will be fairly high.

Rainfall from this system could impact a broad area from the Plains and Midwest into the South and East later Thursday through Saturday.
