If you suspect that a flood or flash flood is about to happen, act immediately to climb to higher ground, as you may have only seconds to escape. Follow any evacuation orders issued by local officials as quickly as possible, and pay close attention to all weather alerts and advisories.

If No Evacuation Has Been Ordered

  • Get updates from The Weather Channel, online at weather.com, or The Weather Channel mobile web and mobile apps.
  • Make sure a battery powered radio and spare batteries are nearby.
  • Keep your Family Disaster Kit, blankets and sleeping bags with you.
  • Call your family's emergency contact person to report your plans.
  • Keep children and pets indoors.
  • Make sure you have cash or credit cards and your car has a full tank of gas in case you must evacuate.

If an Evacuation is Advised

  • Turn off utilities.
  • Pack your Family Disaster Kit, extra blankets and sleeping bags.
  • Lock windows and doors before leaving home.
  • Tune your car radio to a news station for updates on evacuation routes.

During a Flood

  • If you are not at home, do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwaters. Instead, go directly to higher ground
  • Keep children and pets away from floodwaters, storm drains and sewers.
  • If you are in a car, never try to take a shortcut through flooded areas. If your car stalls, immediately abandon it and climb to higher ground if conditions permit.
