Storm Blamed for One Death in Alabama; Damage and Flooding Reported Across the Deep South

Severe storms moving across the South killed one person overnight in Alabama in a possible tornado.

A second person was injured in the storm that destroyed two mobile homes south of Demopolis, Alabama, Marengo County EMA Director Kevin McKinney told the Alabama News Network.

Damage was also reported in Helena, Alabama, from a possible tornado that left trees down in several neighborhoods, according to WTVM.

In all, more than a dozen possible tornadoes were reported in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia.

In addition, rescuers across the South were being kept busy Thursday morning taking people out of flooded homes and off the rooftops of stranded cars.

Many of the flooding reports came from Tennessee, where streets in Knoxville were blocked by standing water. Schools in Rutherford County closed for the day after many of the county's school buses were flooded.

The Lawrence County Public Library sustained roof damage when a tree was knocked down.

More than 30,000 customers had no electricity across the Deep South on Thursday, according to poweroutage.us.

A similar number were blacked out by severe storms on Wednesday afternoon and evening.

One person was injured when high winds blew down scaffolding at a hotel construction site in New Orleans, the Associated Press reported. The person suffered minor injuries, the report added.

Photos posted to social media by the New Orleans Fire Department showed several damaged vehicles.

Intense storms reportedly spawned several tornadoes in Mississippi during the afternoon, though none produced widespread structural damage or were blamed for injuries. In Yazoo County, a mobile home lost its roof, and some barns were damaged, according to WLBT.com.

Most of the damage consisted of downed trees and power lines as the storms intensified.

Damage was also reported from a thunderstorm in Hale County, Alabama. Meteorologist James Spann shared photos of debris on Twitter.

Schools in Walker County, Alabama, dismissed at 1 p.m. Wednesday due to the threat of bad weather.

Leon County Schools in Tallahassee, Florida, announced that it canceled extracurricular activities for Thursday. Florida State University's main campus in Tallahassee will close at 3 p.m. while its Panama City, Florida campus will be closed all day Thursday.
