California's Wildfires, By the Numbers

Thousands of firefighters are currently fighting blazes all over California, under conditions that have been worsened by a long-term drought that has killed much of the state's vegetation.

These fires are burning hundreds of homes and threatening the lives of any humans, pets or wild animals in their path. Here's a closer look at these extremely dangerous wildfires.

Number of Fires

12, mostly in the northern coastal ranges and the Sierra Nevada.

Total Area of Fires

703 square miles, more than half of it from the three most significant blazes.

Number of People Displaced

23,000 from two fires.

720 homes in two fires, hundreds of other structures including businesses, barns, outbuildings and infrastructure.

Deaths

One confirmed; several people unaccounted for.

Firefighters

11,000.

Number of Wildfires in the State This Year

Approximately 6,000, or about 1,500 more than this time last year.

Number of Fire Starts Each Week

Approximately 250.
