Firefighters were throwing everything they could at the King Fire in El Dorado County, California, as the massive blaze continued to burn into its tenth day.

As of Tuesday evening, the large fire east of Sacramento had grown to at least 89,500 acres, Cal Fire reports. Nearly 7,400 firefighters from across the country had joined the fight.

The fires come at what's traditionally seen as the peak of the state's wildfire season, but it's been a painful year already. USA Today reports more than 4,800 fires sprang to life in California so far in 2014 – 1,000 more than an average fire season.

Thousands of families have been impacted, and the photos above show both the emotional and monetary toll the fires have taken on California.
